Have you ever heard the saying that says something about how you can't have the good without the bad? Why is it that God/ mother nature/your higher power would allow so many bad things to happen? One only has to listen to the news on any given day or scroll through one's Facebook page to learn about the bullshit that is happening to so many people. Why can't life be all glitter and gardenias? Because that is just not how it works. Here is a small example.
In East Tennessee, where I live, we have had many days of dark skies and horrible rain. I am talking about flooding, tornadoes and sideways blowing downpours. What started out as me saying how much the rain was needed in our area turned to me getting depressed about yet another gloomy day. Finally, after today's rain, the clouds cleared and the sky was bright and blue. When I got home from work my sweetie and I decided to take advantage of the sunny afternoon and go to the pool at our apartment complex. It had been a while since we hung out at the pool and this is something that we both enjoy doing.
We got to the pool and the minute I sat in the patio chair I could feel the sun's warmth like a welcoming hug. I couldn't help but turn all the way facing the brightness and lift my face up towards the sunshine. The afternoon could not have been prettier and we had such a nice time of just being together and soaking in the Vitamin D. I could not help but wonder about that saying...would I have reacted the way I did to the sunshine if it was always sunny out? Probably not. Now, I do realize that this is simplifying the saying a bit and one could still question the much bigger issues that we face and why those issues are allowed to come about. But, on even the smallest of levels, I hope that this is better understanding of how life is full of ups/downs and good/bad. And, yes, we do appreciate the good more when we have faced the flip side. The bad times do suck but it helps to remember that all storms pass and the sun will shine again!
